Here’s a surprising story that was in the news this week: Atlanta, Georgia. Third graders were presented with a math assignment with questions about slavery. Reports say that these questions were an attempt to “integrate social studies and math lessons.” But the result seems to be more offensive than educational. On Saturday, it will be Lincoln’s birthday. It is normal for American school children to learn that President Lincoln ended legalized slavery in the U.S. with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. It is not as usual for school children to learn that slavery persists to this day. In fact, it never ended.
