Sustainable fashion activist Amy DuFault is worried these days. Worried that the word feminist – and all it stands for – is under assault. That’s why she’s designed a new way to stand-up for women’s rights, loud and proud.
For International Women’s Day, Amy and TS Designs are teaming up to offer a limited-edition, 100 percent slavery-free T-shirt that is certain to be a conversation starter. The online store at TS Designs is open until March 22.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Balance for Better.” Gender balance makes a better world possible. Modern slavery is an example of a world out of balance. More than 70 percent of people in slavery today are women and girls. Many of them make your clothes.
The good news is that women are the backbone of the grassroots anti-slavery movement today. The community groups that Free the Slaves works with on the front lines are prime examples of how women can shape the future.
Each T-shirt sold during our two-week campaign will generate $15 for the anti-trafficking field programs of Free the Slaves. This includes educating the vulnerable about their rights, liberating the enslaved, and helping survivors rebuild their lives through vocational training and community development.
The limited edition F*M#NI$T tee is made with shirts from the Where Your Clothing (WYC) line at TS Designs. They have a “dirt to shirt” fully traceable supply chain, all the way down to the farms where the cotton is grown. You can actually trace where the cotton was grown for each shirt through a unique mapping system, supporting farmers in North Carolina, Texas and New Mexico, and mill workers in North and South Carolina.
The women’s styled tee (slightly more fitted with a flared cut and capped sleeves) will be made from Cotton of the Carolinas fabric; and the unisex tee (your standard T-shirt style) will be made from American Soil Organic fabric. Both fabrics are super-comfortable, ring-spun cotton of medium weight, and mindfully constructed for durability.
Amy and her husband Jim, designed the tee because “feminist is a powerful word that has lost its identity,” they say. “It is almost a bad word to say” in some settings, they add.
We hope this T-shirt creates a new dialogue that supports women’s rights. It shows a tee can be made ethically and sustainably, and be a force for change.
