Behind the Scenes:
Creating the Award

Emergence
Renowned sculptor, John Soderberg says the Freedom Award is about emergence. Emerging from pain and anguish to something better - to freedom.

The entire sculpture evolves from a cracked and broken earth consumed by flames. Rawness gives way to beauty as the figure whom represents every human being held in slavery reaches for a new life. She is not passively waiting for freedom. She is strong, courageous enough to risk reaching for freedom. One hand pushes powerfully away from bondage, the other grows ever more defined as it grasps liberation. She is the best in us. Against all odds.

John Soderberg: In His Own Words
"I have been making art in various media all of my life, and have been a professional sculptor for over 30 years. In all that time, I think I have never been involved in the creation of an artwork so worthy and important, for so deserving and necessary a cause. Artists live for art that really matters, so I was truly honored, and humbled, to be asked to contribute to what is certainly one of the most crucial themes in the history of art, and of humanity. Without basic freedom, all of the other issues which plague or interest us are somewhat academic. As long as one human being remains bound and chained, we are all diminished." -John Soderberg

The Freedom Awards are underwritten by the John Templeton Foundation.
"The Freedom Awards combine the best of two world-changing forces that are central to Sir John Templeton’s positive vision for the future: the power of noble purpose to inspire lives of great significance, and the central importance of enhancing and expanding individual freedom.  In addition, the awards honor the memory of Sir John’s daughter Anne Templeton Zimmerman, who herself was a dedicated and courageous advocate for ending slavery and promoting religious freedom.”

-Kimon Sargeant, Ph.D., VP of Human Sciences, John Templeton Foundation
