The Anne Templeton Zimmerman Fellowships
About the Awards: In 2009, two Fellowships will be awarded to young adults (21 – 30) who have demonstrated consistent determination, creativity and results in the anti-slavery movement, and who are committed to developing their career to help rid the world of slavery. The recipients will receive: • A one-year fellowship to work with Free the Slaves, with a salary of $35,000 plus benefits • A professional development package including accredited academic and non-profit management courses • The opportunity to travel overseas to learn about other anti-slavery efforts. In 2009, the Anne Templeton Zimmerman Fellowships are limited to individuals with eligibility to work in the USA (green card or citizenship). Award criteria: The Anne Templeton Zimmerman Fellowships will be awarded to individuals who most effectively demonstrate: • Commitment to building their career to help end slavery. • Involvement in anti-slavery activities for at least 2 years. • Results that have occurred through their involvement in anti-slavery activities. • Creativity in designing or carrying out anti-slavery activities. • Diligence in carrying out challenging tasks. • Enthusiasm for working with the Free the Slaves team as a staff member. • Ability to contribute to the anti-slavery movement in both the short and the long term. • Be willing to be filmed by FTS for a vignette to be used at the Freedom Awards; filming will occur at beginning of Fellowship. Save the form in your word processing system, complete every question, save again and then attach it to an email. • Send the email to Zimmerman@freetheslaves.net. • All applications must be received by midnight GMT on December 1, 2008. Late applications will not be considered for the 2008 awards. • If you are unable to send your application by email, you may post it to Free the Slaves, 514 10th St, NW, 7th Floor, Washington DC 20004 USA. Allow enough time for it to be received by December 1st. Mark the envelope with the name of the award. • We may then approach individuals/organizations listed as references as well as the applicant him or herself, if further information is needed. • Applications will be considered by an independent and anonymous selection committee of experts on modern slavery. They will create a short-list of potential Fellows. Free the Slaves’ Board of Directors will approve a list of finalists. Interviews will be carried out with the finalists, and following the interviews, the committee will make the final decision in selecting the two Fellows. • The two Fellows will be notified in April 2009, and will begin their Fellowship in July 2009 and end in June 2010. Eligibility Requirements: Individuals are eligible for the Fellowships if they are: • Eligible to work in the USA (green card or citizenship). • Between the ages of 21 and 30 at the time of application. • Fluent in written and spoken English. • Involved in anti-slavery work in some way for at least 2 years. • Committed to building their career in support of ending slavery. • Eager to take advantage of a variety of learning experiences including on-the-job training in the US, meeting with experts in the field, traveling overseas to visit successful anti-slavery programs and taking academic coursework in non-profit management. • Enthusiastic about and willing to commit to spending 12 months as a Free the Slaves employee, working from one of our offices. • Willing to adhere to Free the Slaves’ client and child protection policies. • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, international environment. • Willing to be filmed in preparation for and at the awards ceremony (we will cover agreed travel costs) and willing to speak about past work and Fellowship experience to the media and others. Individuals are not eligible if: • They are a current or former paid staff member of Free the Slaves (unpaid interns or volunteers are eligible). • They have a family member who is currently on Free the Slaves’ Board or paid staff.
